My primary focus is on community development, particularly in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as fostering a sense of welcoming and belonging. I work closely with organizations, service providers, and business owners to enhance their practices and improve their standards.
I support minority leaders and entrepreneurs by helping them access available resources and develop or refine key skills to support their growth and success. My role also includes emergency response to community disasters and crises, as well as implementing language accessibility practices to ensure inclusivity for all community members.
Having grown up in a large city, my family and I faced a significant transition when we moved to a smalltown in Nebraska. This shift, not only in population size but also in adapting to a new country, culture, and language, presented its own set of challenges. Knowing that organizations like the Center exist to support people in similar situations was a driving force for me to get involved. I am passionate about making a meaningful impact and supporting others as they navigate their own journeys.
My professional background is rooted in culinary arts, in which I trained and earned my degree in Mexico. After working as a chef for several years, I discovered a deep passion for community work, which led me to shift my career focus. This transition allowed me to combine my experience with a new commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
Not only do I have the opportunity to provide support, I also help empower individuals to develop their own leadership skills and become advocates for the issues that affect them. I take great pride in helping people fulfill their aspirations, fostering a sense of community and unity, and connecting individuals with the resources they need to address their challenges.
Rural America plays a crucial role in the nation's economy, particularly through agriculture and natural resources industries. Beyond economic contributions, rural areas are home to rich cultural traditions and strong community bonds, which foster a sense of identity and resilience.
I have come to deeply appreciate the unique qualities of rural life. I value the close-knit connections with neighbors, my community’s traditions, the blend of cultures, and even the simple joys like baseball Sundays. These aspects of rural living have shaped my perspective and reinforced the importance of supporting and uplifting rural communities.
Outside of work, my husband and I enjoy traveling to support our son as he plays different sports depending on the season. I also love taking road trips to random places.
Q&A
What is one piece of advice you have never forgotten?
One enduring piece of advice my mother always imparted to me was: "If you cannot say something nice, don't say anything at all." This has been invaluable guidance throughout my life, as words and time are both precious and irreversible.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose, and why?
Rather than settling in one location, I would prefer to travel the world. There are so many unique places and cultures to explore, making it difficult to choose just one destination.
What is your favorite way to relax or unwind?
I find the most fulfilling way to relax is by spending quality time with family and friends, particularly engaging in outdoor activities together.
