Yonder Yo

There's a new paper in town - all of your towns. It's called the Daily Yonder, and it aims to be a paper for the 55 million of us that live in the rural U.S. The site is characterized by rural news, commentary, original research, and a spattering of appearance by other rural bloggers.

Center Newsletter: House Ag Committee Farm Bill Critique

The newsletter features a commentary by Center Director Chuck Hassebrook on the House Ag Committee's current draft of the Farm Bill. Of payment limits reform in the draft bill, he writes:

[E]ven Peterson’s illusion of reform was scuttled in subcommittee for an extension of the 2002 farm bill.

Here at the Center we talk a lot about closing loopholes in current Farm Bill programs. Just this week we said:

The new [EWG] data illustrates how the nation's largest farms exploit loopholes to exceed the limits on farm program payments. It's time for Congress to close loopholes, make the paper limits real and stop subsidizing mega farms to drive their neighbors out of business.

But we might not always do the best job of explaining exactly what these loopholes are.
