In 2013, lawmakers initiated the Iowa Water Quality Initiative (WQI) to implement the goals of the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy (NRS), a statewide framework to reduce nutrient loads in surface water. In the years since, an array of projects have been implemented through the WQI.

Most recently, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) announced a new funding opportunity—Nutrient Reduction Strategy Demonstration Projects.

The announcement presents an opportunity for Iowa’s 27 Watershed Management Authorities (WMAs) to receive funding for project implementation and staffing. This resource provides guidance for WMA leaders considering applying for the program.
