Nebraska Action Alert: Expand access to free school meals

Policy

After the bill was introduced for the fifth time, Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh’s Hunger-Free School Act (LB 966) has advanced to Select File and is scheduled for the second of three rounds of debate today.

This bill would expand children’s access to free school breakfast and lunch at school by using state funds to cover the full cost of meals for students who currently qualify for “reduced-price” meals, ensuring those meals are provided at no cost to families.

In 2025, approximately 128,000 Nebraska children lived in food-insecure homes, putting their health, learning, and long-term well-being at risk. The Hunger-Free School Act (LB 966) helps ensure students do not lose access to school meals due to shifting federal eligibility rules. Meal access is especially important in rural school districts, where the need is disproportionately high

With two additional rounds of debate remaining before final passage, now is a critical moment for action.

Please contact your state senator today and urge them to support LB 966 and keep more Nebraska children fed at school.
