I am a policy manager, focusing on agriculture, conservation, small business lending, and federal policy. I spend a lot of my time supporting staff and overseeing projects to ensure we remain accountable to our grants and funders. The majority of my policy expertise is tied to U.S. Department of Agriculture programs including the Conservation Stewardship Program and Rural Microentrepreneur Assistance Program, as well as federal lawmaking and appropriations processes. I also participate in regional and national coalitions to build strong relationships with partners and peer organizations.
Throughout my professional career, I have worn many hats, working in both corporate and nonprofit settings. There are few nonprofit organizations that focus so intentionally on rural people and places, and I was surprised to learn in my adulthood that there was one in the community where I grew up. The Center cares about many of the topics I personally care about, particularly working lands conservation and rural small businesses. I want to help rural communities return to the vibrancy I remember them having when I was a kid.
Living and making friends in urban areas helped me understand how unique the rural experience is, particularly having grown up on a small, diversified operation. I live on the family farm, manage our cow-calf herd, and help out however else I'm needed. It's an honor to help preserve our legacy of animal husbandry and land stewardship.
