Feeding Central Nebraska - Exploring Our Farm & Food Economy with Ken Meter

Farm and Food

Central Nebraska’s farm economy is robust, with more than 8,600 farms producing $7.6 billion in crops and livestock in 2022. Despite producing more than a quarter of Nebraska’s crops and livestock in 2022, food insecurity remains a key concern in the region. One in four residents lives near or below the poverty line and 12% of the population relies on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

According to Ken Meter, author and food systems expert from the Crossroads Resource Center, Central Nebraska residents spend $841 million per year on food, but less than 1% is purchased directly from local farms. Increasing local food buying by just $5 per resident per week could generate $60 million in new annual farm income.

“Feeding Central Nebraska - Exploring Our Farm & Food Economy with Ken Meter,” a community session, was recorded on Oct. 30, 2025, in Kearney, Nebraska. This presentation provides a snapshot of the agricultural economy in the Central Nebraska region and provides a starting point for conversations about strengthening local food systems.
