CENTRAL CITY, NEBRASKA—Community members are invited to a conversation to explore the topic of redistricting on Wednesday, Dec. 11, in Central City.
The event will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Merrick County Activity Center, 1304 17th St., in Central City. Light food and drink will be provided.
Hosted by the Center for Rural Affairs and Civic Nebraska, the free event will feature a discussion about redistricting, major bills from the 2019 session, and what’s expected in the 2020 session. State Sens. Wendy DeBoer of Bennington, and Tony Vargas and John McCollister of Omaha will help lead the conversation. Along with the senators, Center for Rural Affairs and Civic Nebraska staff will be available to answer questions.
Redistricting of the Nebraska Legislature will come following collection of Census data next year. But, to ensure a fair, non-partisan, constituent informed process is in place, Jordan Rasmussen, policy manager with the Center for Rural Affairs, said the legislature must establish guidelines.
“Redistricting is a topic that is important to all Nebraskans, especially for rural areas of the state where there will be a shift in the distribution balance of seats,” Rasmussen said. “Our state legislature is meant to reflect its people, and a fair mapping of districts is necessary to accomplish this goal. Moreover, as constituents, it is imperative that we be engaged in this policy making process that will shape our districts for the decade ahead.”
