PIERRE, SOUTH DAKOTA – Wind, solar, and other renewable energy priorities in South Dakota will be discussed in a community conversation in Pierre on Tuesday, Aug. 27.
Hosted by the Center for Rural Affairs, the event is free and open to the public, and will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce Community Room, 800 W. Dakota Ave., Pierre, South Dakota 57501. Refreshments will be provided.
Attendees will have an opportunity to engage with staff and members from a variety of organizations working to advance renewable energy in South Dakota. This includes the Center for Rural Affairs, Izaak Walton League, Citizens Climate Lobby, Clean Grid Alliance, and The Nature Conservancy. Discussion topics will cover crafting ordinances, opportunities for communities to invest in renewables, energy efficiency, and more areas relating to clean energy policy.
“South Dakota has the potential to be a leader in renewable energy,” said Heidi Kolbeck-Urlacher, policy assistant at the Center for Rural Affairs. “But, to take full advantage of that potential, citizens need to get involved and look for ways their community can benefit from clean energy.”
As clean energy projects are developed across the state, energy transmission infrastructure has become a need.
“The energy landscape in South Dakota is rapidly changing,” Kolbeck-Urlacher said. “Rural communities should not be left out of the conversation. Renewables are now the cheapest source of energy for parts of the Midwest, and this is bringing change to many communities.”
