SANTEE, NEBRASKA – The Santee Farmers Market, located outside the Ohiya Casino and Resort, at 53142 Highway 12, east of Niobrara on the Santee Sioux Reservation, is now open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October.
The market is part of the Santee Garden and Market Project, a joint effort between the Center for Rural Affairs and Nebraska Indian Community College (NICC).
“This is an exciting season at the market,” said Kristine Flyinghawk, market manager. “We have grown to 32 vendors and will have even more homemade and handmade items, as well as healthy foods for sale.”
Along with locally-grown produce, visitors may purchase baked goods, authentic Native American buffalo bone carvings, inlaid jewelry, and beadwork from various artists.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cards are accepted.
The market launched in 2012 and served more than 1,000 customers during the 2017 season. There is still room for vendors to get involved and all are welcome.
Working together with the community, NICC and the Center have also created a series of garden, market, and artist trainings. The garden and market trainings include demonstrations on soil preparation, growing techniques, and preparations for direct sales. The beading and artist workshops provide resources for selling artwork and other handmade projects.
