Land Link Sneak Peek

This month we introduce a new column featuring landowners and beginning farmers or ranchers looking for an opportunity to partner with others. Participants are drawn from our Lank Link Program.

Landowners: Lanette and Larry Stec own and operate Erstwhile Farm, a certified organic 400 acre crop, livestock and produce farm near Columbus, Nebraska.

The Stecs are interested in partnering with a beginning farmer and would welcome the addition of grass-fed cattle to their existing operation. The Stecs are also interested in hosting an intern for the 2011 growing season. The internship would start in May 2011 and go through fall harvest with room and board provided.

Land-seekers: The farmers at Tiny Planet Produce (Benjamin and Andrea Hopper and Christian Rauls) near St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, seek a 10-20 acre farm suitable for vegetable production.

The Hoppers started Tiny Planet Produce in 2008 and sell produce at farmers markets in the Twin Cities and through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. The farmers are looking for more land to expand current production and a longer-term lease so they can invest in perennial fruit and vegetable production. The property must have a well for vegetable irrigation and a house large enough for three adults. The team is looking to continue their operation in the Southern United States.
