Majority Leader Reid filed for cloture on the entire farm bill yesterday afternoon. The cloture request will "ripen" early tomorrow. At that point the Senate will vote on whether to end debate on the farm bill.

Livin' On a Prayer

The chances for a farm bill passing the Senate this year are rapidly dimishing. Last night it appeared that a deal had been struck to consider a certain list of amendments.  Apparently, that deal went down in flames.

Senator Dorgan Sums Up the Progress

Senator Dorgan speaking of the lack of progress in the Senate, "If family farmers farmed like legislators legislate, there would be no food."

And then Senator Dorgan a few minutes later, "You could compare the United States Senate to a glacier, but the difference is that a glacier actually moves from time to time."

Still No Real Farm Bill Debate

Earlier today it looked like Democratic and Republican leadership were close to an agreement on amendments that would allow debate on the farm bill to go forward. Just now though, Senator Harkin returned to the Senate floor and said that there is still no agreement.

Senator Harkin must have mentioned the possibility of an extension of the current farm bill ten times in as many minutes. Both Senator Harkin and Senator Reid noted on the floor today that if real debate does not begin this week, the farm bill is unlikely to be completed before the Senate adjourns for the year.
