Staff spotlight: Knowledge of small business success is Nancy’s niche

Nancy Flock has been helping people in rural areas make their dreams come true for more than a decade.

Through her role as a loan specialist with the Center for Rural Affairs, she assists entrepreneurs with obtaining financing for their small businesses, but she does more than help people get loans. Nancy also works with them on creating their business plans and financial projections, and guides them through the entire business startup process.

Born and raised near North Platte, Nebraska, Nancy grew up in a bilingual household, and has business sense running through her blood.

“Because I grew up in a family that had a small business, this role [with the Center] is something that's very near and dear to my heart,” she said. “Having the opportunity to utilize my skills to serve hard-working, rural Nebraskans, including Latino entrepreneurs, and being able to provide the support that small businesses in rural areas need, is why I love my job.”

A background in banking has benefited Nancy in her role as a loan specialist, as well as firsthand experiences through her family’s business.

“My mother often took me to her native Mexico where she gathered artisanal items for her import business,” she said. “Today, I help small businesses and Latino entrepreneurs similar to my mom. Statistics say that people are leaving small towns in big numbers. But, I also see that rural places are becoming more diverse, and I’m glad to help entrepreneurs be a part of that.”

Nancy hopes she can continue playing an important role in keeping Nebraska's communities vibrant and thriving through the support she offers small businesses.

“Rural America is important to me because of the unique way of living it can offer,” she said. “I’m able to still enjoy the fresh air, open spaces, and safety that I grew up with.”

Nancy serves the southwest and central regions of Nebraska, including Arthur, Blaine, Brown, Chase, Custer, Dawson, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Grant, Hayes, Hooker, Keith, Keya Paha, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Hitchcock, Red Willow, Rock, and Thomas counties.

She lives with her two dogs, Ben and Jerry, and in her spare time enjoys running, stand-up paddleboarding, camping, and live music.
