Farm Bill News

Kansans talk farm bill in Washington

Since June, I have had the honor of helping the Center for Rural Affairs educate and interact with members of Congress and farmers from Kansas on the 2018 farm bill. Most of my work has consisted of phone calls and visits in and around Kansas. But, recently, I had the chance to head to the heart of the farm bill policy discussion, Washington, D.C., to visit with the Kansas delegation on Capitol Hill.

Farm bill expires on Sept. 30, what’s next?

The 2014 farm bill expires on Sept. 30, 2018. What happens if Congress does not pass a new farm bill in time?

Congress can either vote to extend the 2014 farm bill, or they can allow the farm bill to lapse.

In 2013, Congress passed an extension. It was not ideal. Members failed to include any funding for the Rural Microentrepreneur Assistance Program, the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program, and other small but mighty programs in the extension. These programs closed their doors until the 2014 farm bill was passed.

Dear Sens Brown and Ernst: We appreciate your leadership on conservation

The country is at an important crossroads for conservation. Farmers are increasingly interested in adopting practices to preserve soil health, protect water quality, and invest in greater resiliency. Federal conservation programs play a crucial role by offering a pathway for farmers and ranchers to implement and adopt conservation practices and move toward whole farm conservation planning.
