Standing Up For Rural America

Elected officials and candidates are hitting the campaign trail, probably at an event near you. In rural America, campaign events are often smaller and less formal, providing an excellent opportunity to talk to candidates about creating a better future for our small towns and rural areas.
Ask them to fight to protect funding for conservation programs like the Conservation Stewardship Program. It supports farmers and ranchers who protect our soil, water and other natural resources on the land they actively farm and ranch.

Ask them to ensure that the farm bill includes strong support for programs that create genuine economic opportunities in rural America. Rural entrepreneurs are renewing the countryside and our rural mainstreets. The Farm Bill should strengthen and support them. It should provide broad support for a new generation of farmers and ranchers by investing in the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Opportunity Act, which is a national strategy for addressing the greatest challenges and barriers facing beginning farmers and ranchers. It should also invest in proven rural development strategies that draw upon entrepreneurship and small business development.

Lastly, if they want to know how to pay for these investments, ask them to stop subsidizing mega farmers to drive small and midsize farmers off the land. The Farm Bill should cap the amount the largest farms are reaping through commodity program payments and through crop insurance premium subsidies.

Your voice is crucial to winning a Farm Bill that invests in our future, rather than subsidizes our demise.
