Across the Nation
Kentucky: Prolific clover in Kentucky’s pastures this summer has proven deadly for cows. State Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer has asked Governor Steve Beshear to request a Federal Disaster Declaration from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The cattle are dying of Primary Ruminal Tympany, known as Frothy Bloat, a condition that causes gas swells in a cow’s rumen, putting pressure on the lungs and eventually causing suffocation. Some Kentucky cattle producers have lost between 25 and 30 percent of their herds.
Utah: Construction crews are at work on the expansion of the Stagecoach Natural Gas Processing Plant, but attorneys for both the Ute Indian Tribe and Questar Gas Management aren’t finished fighting over the expansion. Attorneys for the tribe say they plan to ask two federal agencies to address “outrageous conduct” by Questar because of the company’s alleged failure to gain proper permits for construction of the Stagecoach plant expansion.
