President Visits Midwest States
The president visited an organic farm near Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and Siemens Energy wind turbine manufacturing plant in Fort Madison, Iowa, which added hundreds of jobs after receiving a $3.5 million tax credit through the federal Recovery Act.
“It made me feel particularly good that he was with Secretary Vilsack in Mount Pleasant, had some rhubarb pie and actually visited a farm,” said Charlotte Shivvers, of Knoxville, Iowa, one of several Center for Rural Affairs supporters who attended the presidential event in Ottumwa, Iowa.
According to Shivvers, it showed wisdom and courage that he chose Ottumwa, with its high unemployment, high rates of poverty and high dropout rates. Ottumwa is a good example of the small cities and towns in rural America that have felt a major pinch dur¬ing the nation’s economic downturn. If the president wants to talk about recovery, he has to make the case for his plans in places like Ottumwa.
We share Charlotte Shivvers’ view on the aptness of selecting Fort Madison, Mount Pleasant, Ottumwa, Macon, Missouri and Quincy, Illinois. We hope that visiting these rural American cities and small towns reminds the administration that rural America has much to contribute to the nation’s recovery.
And there are important opportunities to expand those rural contributions, such as the creation of a strong Renewable Electricity Standard to enhance wind energy development, and support for rural small business and entrepreneurial development – like getting the Rural Microenterprise Assistance Program up and running.
Thanks for visiting the rural Midwest Mr. President; don’t forget what you heard here.
