Hearing about the 2012 Farm Bill
Testifying in Iowa, farmer Varel Bailey spoke of the need to address rural broadband access to ensure a vibrant rural future and of the challenges of farming in the face of highly concentrated livestock, processing and supplier markets.
Fred Brossy, an organic farmer from Idaho, testified about the increased investment in organic agriculture in the 2008 farm bill and urged legislators to build upon those gains in 2012. He urged special attention be paid to organic producers operating intensive operations on a smaller number of acres.

The 2012 farm bill represents a new opportunity to increase investment in all of rural America. We will be working to increase investment in small business development, beginning and entrepreneurial farmers, conservation and in programs that help our small towns increase their competitiveness. The long-term battle for farm program payment limits, livestock market reform and the emerging battle over who controls farmers’ seed supply will also continue.
At the field hearings, legislators heard testimony from preselected panelists and did not take public comment. We encourage you to submit public comment online at http://agriculture.house.gov/inside/feedbackform.html.
