Answering the Call: A conference for veteran farmers

Farm and Food

By Jordan Rasmussen, former staff member

Have you seen the news? The Center for Rural Affairs is hosting a conference for veteran farmers.

“Answering the Call: Veteran Farmer Conference” is on Thursday, June 22, at the Seward Civic Center in Seward, Nebraska, starting at 8 a.m. This free conference is sponsored by the Center for Rural Affairs and Legal Aid of Nebraska.

Why a veteran farmer conference?

We want to help veterans run successful farming operations, whether they’re just starting out or have been doing this for decades.

Who should attend?

The conference is designed for military veterans who are farming or want to start farming. Some of the training content is designed for beginning farmers, and some is applicable to farmers at all stages. If you’re a veteran with an interest in farming, we hope to see you there!

What’s happening at the conference?

We’ll have speakers, panels, booths, and networking opportunities addressing topics that help veterans start farming and keep farming successfully. Key topics include:

  • affordable financing;
  • land access;
  • mentorship opportunities with fellow veterans;
  • organizations and resources to assist veterans; and
  • economic and environmental sustainability.

Many organizations that serve farmers and veterans will be participating. For instance, experts from USDA’s Farm Service Agency and the Nebraska Department of Agriculture will discuss farm start-up and financing opportunities, two key issues for beginning farmers.

Throughout the conference, we’ll share strategies, opportunities, and success stories from veteran farmers. Beginning and established veteran farmers will have the opportunity to meet, network, and learn from each other’s experience.
