Nebraska Tax Committee Update

This fall the Tax Modernization Committee, a group of Nebraska state senators charged with evaluating our state's tax system, held public hearings across the state.  We are happy to report that Center for Rural Affairs' supporters testified at each of the hearings!

Most Nebraskans who testified at the hearings support property tax relief and a few support income tax cuts. The Tax Modernization Committee is meeting in executive session to discuss committee recommendations thoughout November.

The committee will finalize their report, including recommendations by mid-December. The Unicameral will consider committee recommendations (if necessary) in the 2014 session starting in January.

Rebuild Nebraska, a coalition of Nebraska groups concerned with fair taxation including the Center, is circulating a petition in support of responsible tax structure. If you are a Nebraskan, you can add your name here. The petition calls for a Nebraska tax code that allows our state to invest in world-class schools, safe communities, top-notch roads and infrastructure, and quality health care for all residents – investments that grow our economy and make Nebraska a great place to live.

It's critical that Nebraskans keep in contact with their state senators and share their views on tax modernization. And if you're interested in writing a letter to the editor in your local paper on tax issues, we can help!  Give me a call at 402.687.2103 ext. 1014 or email virginiam@cfra.org.
