Intern at the Center

The Center for Rural Affairs has two intern openings for the summer and fall of 2009.

1. Health Care Organizing Internship

The Center for Rural Affairs is seeking two or more interns to work with our organizing staff as we advocate for federal health care reform that supports rural small business owners, family farmers and ranchers and rural communities.

The position is located in our office in Lyons, Nebraska. We are seeking applicants able to join us for a period of at least three months during 2009. Starting dates are flexible. The position is paid, and we will help arrange housing if needed.

You will work with our policy organizing staff on grassroots outreach, organizational network building and communications in support of our work to secure federal health care reform that works for rural America. The position will allow you to participate fully in a public policy advocacy effort of a nationally known nonprofit organization.

2. Communications Internship

The Center for Rural Affairs has one opening for an intern to help build our online presence, improve our communications, and increase our outreach. Our interns are given actual responsibilities that allow them to make significant contributions to our work. You will fill a vital role in our organizational structure, and we will treat you accordingly. Activities may include:

Communications: The Center for Rural Affairs publishes a variety of reports, newsletters, website content and press releases. Help us turn turn out top-notch content, especially for our website. A good applicant will have excellent writing skills including knowledge of what it takes to write and format material for online environments. Basic HTML knowledge is helpful, but not required.

Website Design: The Center for Rural Affairs is always looking for ways to improve our website and online capabilities. We are seeking a website intern well versed in some combination of CSS, PHP, and MySQL. Knowledge of Drupal and CiviCRM are also helpful, but not necessary. Activities will include CSS and PHP based design and development of interactive action alert sections of our Drupal run website. This is a great opportunity to be involved in the ground level construction of a website using some of the latest, most popular, and open source website tools in the nonprofit world.

Time Commitment: Flexible
Timeline: Filled through August 2009; Open after that.
Location: Lyons, Nebraska strongly preferred. Some flexibility for the right person.
Compensation: Yes. Dependent upon experience and term of availability. Academic credit can also be arranged.
