56-43

The Dorgan-Grassley amendment lost and will not be part of the 2007 Farm Bill. 56 yes, 43 no. 60 votes were needed to win. We'll post the individual votes in an hour or two when they are put on the Senate website.

Update (Brian): Only in the U.S. Senate can you win and still lose. Like Ken said yesterday.

That's it's purpose

The founding fathers wanted to make sure the "mob" didn't get any crazy ideas, and hence: The U.S. Senate. Where a Senator elected from the smallest state with only 60 or 70 thousand votes can quash the will of tens of millions.

Sad

I'm very thankful to you all for doing such great informational coverage and support of the Dorgan-Grassley. Sad but still thankful and grateful to the people like CFRAers out there.

Thanks

Thanks for your kind words.  They mean a great deal to everyone here.

Filibusters -- make them do it!

Any one Senator can filibuster a piece of legislation. The problem is that these days it only takes the threat of a filibuster to raise the passage threshold to 60.

Sen. Reid should have said to Sen. Lincoln: "OK, if you don't like this amendment, you can have the floor for as long as you need. We'll check back tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that." If she really believes in plantation style farms so much, let her put some real effort into it.
