SARE is looking for a communications/outreach assistant, and the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University is offering a special graduate assistantship for the fall of 2008. See below for more details.


 

Center for Rural Affairs Internship Program

Every year three to four interns work with the Center for Rural Affairs. Interns are accepted throughout the year and as opportunities, funding sources and good matches between applicants and projects arise. Interns can work on policy, organizing, communications or direct service projects. Recent interns have:

  • Worked with our organizing staff to help build our national, grassroots, activist base
  • Worked with our direct service staff on wind energy development in Nebraska
  • Worked with our communication and development staff to update our media contacts and undertake a fundraising project
  • Worked with our website staff on website development and online action alerts

Outreach/Communications Position Available with SARE

The National Outreach Office of SARE is now accepting applications for a Communications/Outreach assistant. This position will be housed at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland. Applications will be accepted until June 27, 2008. The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program works nationwide to advance farming systems that are profitable, environmentally sound and good for communities. It is primarily a grantmaking organization. Since its inception in 1988, the program has funded nearly 4,000 research, education, outreach and community development projects to advance sustainable practices and innovations in American agriculture. SARE grants are administered through offices located in four U.S. regions: Northeast, North Central, West and South.

SARE's National Outreach Office, located in Beltsville, Maryland, analyzes and translates grantees' work into practical, how-to books, bulletins, and fact sheets for farmers, ag educators, NGOs, and other stakeholders involved in sustainable agriculture. SARE Outreach also develops key partnerships with educators, researchers, media, and other stakeholders in order to further advance sustainability in the nation's agriculture.

Graduate Assistantship in Sustainable Agriculture and Business Administration

The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University is proud to be a sponsor of a graduate assistantship for students interested in pursuing a masters degree in sustainable agriculture with a minor in business, or a masters degree in business administration (MBA) with a minor in sustainable agriculture in the fall of 2008. The ideal candidate will have work/life experience in business and/or sustainable agriculture, and be truly committed to implementing the knowledge developed within this dual concentration.

Applicants must fulfill the admission requirements for the Graduate Program in Sustainable Agriculture if pursuing the MS, or for the graduate business school if pursuing the MBA. Candidates chosen will work as part of a Leopold Center team involved in either the Value Chain Partnerships for a Sustainable Agriculture project or the Marketing and Food Systems Initiative.

The deadline for application is May 30, 2008, but due to the competitive nature of these assistantships, prospective students are encouraged to submit their materials as soon as possible.
