Lyons, NE – In response to comments made by Senator Harkin today regarding the ultimate political viability of the Dorgan-Grassley payment limits amendment to the Farm Bill, the Center for Rural Affairs released the following statement.
“We are sorely disappointed to read that Senator Harkin is not planning to use his position as conference committee chair to fight for family farms. The farm program is destroying family farming in America for a simple reason. Opponents of payment limitations fight against them, while many who claim they support them, won’t fight for them,” said Chuck Hassebrook of the Center for Rural Affairs.

“In the past, Tom Harkin has fought for average Americans. The time is now for Senator Harkin to state unequivocally that he will do everything in his power to secure real payment limits in the next farm bill. Family farmers are counting on him,” Hassebrook continued.
